Plastic pollutes our waters

Single-use plastics, such as plastic bottles, are among the most common waste items found on beaches and coastlines. And from there? Much of it ends up in the sea. Every year, around 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans. Imagine: that’s the equivalent of 1.27 million overflowing rubbish lorries – enough to span more than half the Earth’s circumference. Currently, an estimated 150 million tonnes of plastic waste float in the oceans. That’s equivalent to the mass of 150,000 Eiffel Towers or 375 Empire State Buildings.

How is the target of 6.5 billion bottles saved calculated?

Our products can replace bottled water in daily water drinking habits. Market research shows that many consumers and business customers are switching from bottled water to water filtered with BRITA. This helps reduce waste, carbon emissions and resource consumption.

As part of our sustainability strategy, we created an indicator to measure our impact on the planet trough our products. The so called “Product Impact” assesses the positive effect we have on the environment. The methodology measures how many bottles (based on 1-litre bottles of 28.6 cm in height) are replaced every year because consumers and customers use BRITA filtered instead of bottled water.

Some of the aspects considered in the calculation include the number of sold cartridges, the filter capacity of the products and market research-based insights into the rate at which users of our products replace bottled water with BRITA filtered water.

The calculation method has been incorporated in existing data and reporting structures to ensure data validity and integrity.

Our overarching goal is to convince more people to switch from bottled water by providing sustainable solutions.

Some BRITA products are made of plastic. Why and how environmentally friendly is that?

Due to its material properties – being lightweight, durable, and flexible – plastic is still a valuable and versatile raw material. It is currently often the most suitable material for our products. However, we are aware of the negative impact of plastic production and consumption on the planet. That is why we aim to greatly reduce the use of fossil-based virgin plastic in our products – by 30% by the end of 2025. By using bio-based materials, we have reduced the proportion of fossil-based plastic by more than 50% in our Style eco and Glass water filter jugs. All our suppliers are audited and certified according to the internationally recognised ISCC PLUS mass balance certification standard. This provides consumers with the certainty that what we promise is exactly what they receive when purchasing our products.

What happens to used BRITA filter cartridges? Is there a recycling programme?

Sustainability has been a priority to us for a long time, with the first cartridge recycling programme launched in 1992. The BRITA recycling programme is well-established in many European countries, including Germany, England, France, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. In cooperation with many trade partners, our water filter cartridges are collected and transported to our headquarters in Germany.

In Asia, water filter cartridges are not transported to Germany. Instead, we collaborate with partner companies to enable local filter recycling.
