Ever seen a fog catcher?
A story about a promising idea
Where others see only fog, Saúl Oliva Cabrera sees hope. For Saúl it’s important to have a special “view of how we are looking at our forest, how we are looking after the environment.” His hope is to create a fully grown forest capable of self-sustaining and supplying water to itself and the surrounding area. How much water is in a cloud?
Let's imagine a cloud with a volume of 1 km³ and assume that the water droplets inside it are uniform. Although this isn’t typical in nature, we need to adopt these simplified conditions for our calculation: A cloud can contain up to 0.3 g of water per cubic meter. Consequently, a cloud with a volume of one cubic meter contains only 0.00003 liters of water. However, as imagined earlier, we are considering a cloud with a volume of 1 km³. Therefore, if we multiply 0.00003 liters by 1,000,000,000 (the number of cubic meters in 1 km³), then we conclude that our cloud contains approximately 300,000 liters of water. Wow!
